It probably is why I enjoy learning about the beauty of other belief systems. Why I enjoy finding pearls of wisdom in the teachings and cultures which are different from mine.
There really is only a few hard and fast points of doctrine that will never change in the LDS church.
Probably the most important is our belief in revelation. The applicable Article of Faith is:
"We believe all that God has revealed, all that He does now reveal, and we believe that He will yet reveal many great and important things pertaining to the Kingdom of God"
Thus we believe that you can receive knowledge of God to the extent that you are prepared to ask for it, and be obedient to it. And, we believe that the church can and will change as required to deal with the needs of the church and as revealed by God through His prophet. *shrug* So when the federal government made it impossible for polygamy to continue, the practice was halted. Doesn't bother me in the least. I personally have a hard enough time being a good husband to the wife I have, I need no more lessons in humility to convince me that more wives is not a need that I have.
I think it would be very funny were some other religion, say a Moslem, Buddhist, or whoever, who having come to the U.S. and decided that the prohibition against polygamy was prohibiting the practice of his religion, were to take the matter to the Supreme Court again, and this time got the law struck down. The LDS church would probably be among those speaking out against a modern adaptation of polygamy.
It would be rather hilarious actually... |
