So, there's this link to a CNN article. Regardless of the justification (or not) of jailing the woman, it's the final line of the article that piqued my interest...
Minion, who served 45 days in jail for a similar violation in 2000, said as an American Indian she has the right to feed deer as part of her connection to nature.
This is news to me. Were the American Indians (the last I heard, each group was distinct) prone to feeding herds of wild critters? It's this type of statement that ticks people off. After all, I don't begrudge the right of our local First Nations peoples to have a cut of the salmon fishery for ceremonial purposes. I don't begrudge them a right to the land that they were promised. Etc., etc. I *do* begrudge anyone their assertion that their ethnicity affords them certain rights that history doesn't show they have.
Taken to extremes, I could assert that I have the right to perform certain deeds due to my Swedish, Irish, Italian, and Yugoslavian ancestry. Taken even further, my child would have those rights as well as those accruing from his Spanish, Phillipine, and Chinese ancestry.
