I was sad to read in a book somewhere that AVL trees are now considered passe.
I don't think so. I think the book said that now red-black trees that rotate the most frequently requested data to the top are more popular.

I wrote some insertion code for an AVL tree before, but then couldn't easily figure out how to do deletion of the elements.
