you're confronting gives a rat's arse about you, or what other people think (i.e., public opinion). If they don't, you're an annoyance that will be ignored at best, tortured and killed at worst.

To put it bluntly, sometimes moral victories don't count. It's been said that war doesn't determine who's right, only who's left. If the other guy is perfectly happy to put you and all your supporters in shallow graves, regardless what anyone else thinks, guess who's left (and thus wins by default)?
