Tag names don't have spaces. IMG is the tag (or, if you're going to be pickky, "img", as XHTML is case-sensitive), src is an attribute (probably the most important).

(However, almost all HTML learning material I have seen is utter donkey balls, and results in *awful* pages that make FrontPage's output look good.)

<img alt="fnord" src="fnord.png"> is just as valid.
