As for nuclear fusion on the planet's surface, one of these was test-detonated on Elugelap Island in 1952. Fusion reactors look like being a really groovy power source, but the actual reactors are more dangerous than fission ones. A fission reactor can only leak; it can't go off like a nuclear bomb.
