Who unfortunately died on my daughters 11th birthday.
Salem was a petstore cat. Normally I get them from a shelter or someone getting arid of a kitty... But he was for my daughter and she'd just started her cancer treatment. She'd taken to the show "Sabrina the Teenage Witch" and wanted a black cat. Black cats aren't easy to find and only 2 stores had one. One was rediciously expensive. The other store where we found salem was cheap... But salem came with a story. Apprently someone had left some kittens out in a trash bag... not caring if they died and hoping the trash man would get them. One of the store people spotted the moving bag and was greatly saddened. Luckily most the kittens lived and they nursed them back to health and put them in the store to find them loving homes.
So salem was a bit skittish and shy. He also was 1/2 siamese but that wasn't apprent right away other than he had blue eyes. He just looked like a fluffy black cat but when he was older sitting in the sun you could see he really was coffee brown and black and wet obviously related to a siamese.(a wet siamese cat is like a hairless chuaua dog :P )
Anyways Salem would sing when happy... mewoooower mew mow merrrrowwwer mew rrrrowww... etc He also rocked and would hop up on the tub when we were having a bath and play with the bath water or try to drink from the tub.(he liked playing with my bath bubbles)
He also would cuddle when bathed and he was good about getting baths. He sat on my chest wet drying himself and shivering wanting "mommy." He also would get under the blankets like a human and but his head on my arm snuggled in and sleep with me. He also came to my daughter, me or my son when we were feeling sad or sick as he knew we needed the cuddles.
He'd eat pringles(plain ones only), cheese salsa, cheesies, blueberry muffins, etc. I'm pretty sure he thought he was human. He'd get sad too if one of us would leave he'd cry for us at the door. My roommate heard it and if the window in the livng room was cracked open a bit we could hear it. He'd also sit at the window waiting for us to get home.
One day he helped save our lives. He I guess sensed something was wrong. Natural gas was leaking downstairs. Having been upstairs busy with myson I didn't find it/smell it til I followed the cat downstairs cuz he was acting odd. Low and behold I smelt the leak and woke my roomate. Pouding on his door then shaking him as he was hard to wake. Then we had to call the fire dept and I needed oxygen due to effects of the gas and getting people out, etc.
Another time our cat was a good watch cat. Salem saw people that shouldn't of been here so late at night. He tried to wake us meowing in our rooms. When that didn't work he went into my roommates room and clawed him. He knew that would get his attention and he'd chase him out. Which he did but by the time my roommate took the hint it was too late the poeple had made off with a few thousand dollars worth of equipment from the garage.(now it has an alarm in it)
Salem also used to fetch things... and he'd steal shiney things and hide them behind the washer. He also liked playing with lego and would steal my sons lego and play hockey with it. I caught him every so carefully picking up tiny peices in his mouth and carrying them out to play with. But lego wasn't the only toy he liked. A few times I heard odd noises when my son was out. One time I was quiet enough and snuck up... Amusingly I saw the cat stradling my sons tonka truck with paws on the handle for the bucket(it was a front end loader) and pushing along with his hind legs.
Anyways Salem was my favorite kitty... Who unfortunately had to be put down after kidney stones caused serious bleeding... My other fav cat lived to be 15 and was half bobcat. "Boots" was very smart and very large and was eccentric... and occasionally would pull "garfield" type stunts. :) But listened like a dog and would follow commands as well as was also protective. |
