Regarding this. What you did by sticking a big pipe on your speaker is to reinforce the narrow range of frequencies to which your impromptu pipe was tuned. Kind of like a pipe organ indeed. A horn might increase the loading efficiency of the subwoofer through its whole range, but a pipe can only make a big ol' lump in the graph. How big was your pipe?
