You can also do that when you put the phone next to a powered speaker (radio, computer speakers). Then a few seconds before the phone rings (or you receive an SMS), you the speaker emits a pattern of beeps. (bip pada-bip pada-bip pada-bip pada-baaaaaaah) (heh). At least in South Africa's GSM network(s).
