Actually, you weren't being *that* clueless, but certainly
not cautious either. Sometimes it doesn't take much, to
raise a 'stink' with politcal situations at work.
Now, at this point, you don't even have the original files
in disk- so you can't demonstrate the severity of the situation
and your demented-teacher could deny/downplay the whole thing,
claiming that you made it up or blew it out of proportion, due
to some imagined grudge.
For this to come through YOU directly, as a statement to admins
with in-tact files for examples- that may have caused stress;
but to have this rumble around the rumor mill, through your Mom,
changing to in-accurate information, and having NO proof...
Unfortunately things don't look good.
