Logical statement base to start from: every day your happiness level is generally about the same. Define the average happiness level to be a neutral state of happiness. Or, just fine. That is, neither happy, nor sad, but just fine or ok.
Now, consider the statement: If you expect to get something on Valentine's day, and you don't get it, then you may be dissappointed.
So, if you get something, you won't be dissappointed. That is, you'd be just fine. That is, your state will be neutral. Maybe a little above neutral towards happy state, but still, hey, you were expecting something, and your expectations fulfilled. You're fine or neutral. The question is, if you're fine, just like you would be fine on any other day why have Valentine's day at all ?
Is it just gift exchange ? In this case you can just get your own gift for yourself ! That's the best thing, cuz you know yourself best, and most likely will get yourself the best gift. Now, if you are going to buy yourself a gift, why do it on Valentine's day ? I mean, what if you are short on money that day or something ? Why not make it further convenient for you and buy your own gift whenever you want ?
Now, back to the theorem, if you don't get something (a gift), then you may be sad, whiny, and dissappointed. That is not the purpose of Valentine's day for someone to be dissappointed. It is the day to be happy. Therefore, if you are dissapointed, it is best not to have Valentine's day.
However, maybe key is not to expect anything. If you don't expect anything, then Valentine's day is just like any other day. So, why have it ?
All roads seem to lead to Why have Valentine's day ?
