Serious question by trulla2003-02-13 01:33:27
  It varies. by slayer2003-02-13 01:41:32
What, pray, has the US ever done for Europe by jedidiahstott 2003-02-13 14:42:47
Or elsewhere , for that matter ? That has not been paid for very handsomely. The only reason that there are US troops in Europe was so that Europe could be used as the sacrifical lamb in the event of a Russina attack. They do naff all, and never did, for Europe. Most places in the world where US troops are based (my country is fortunate - we're small and don't have oil so Uncle Sam's not interested) don't get given much choice. And I don't think that most USians have any idea just how much the antics of the US government are disliked by the rest of the world. (Almost) all USians I have met have been reasonable to very nice people. But the arrogant, domineering and hypocritical attitude of the US governemt negates all the good will that ordinary USians generate. the Ugly American is a reality - and a lot of people resent the way the US government constantly meddles in the internal affairs of other countries. I am sure that if the US packed up and went home, everybody would be very happy .As as for the idea that the US somehow "saved the world" - the best that can be said is that it is self delusion - others might use a more bovine term . As for WMD, I don't see anything that Iraq has that the US (and others) don't have . Let the world agree to outlaw *all* such things and we will all rejoice - but I can't see the US government agreeing .
