It took time for them to enter the consciousness of the public and present a certain image. After that, it was much easier for the ads to manipulate that image with the times. Likewise, removing the ads won't have an immediate impact. But, gradually, the most public voice about them will be negative, and that _will_ impact the "coolness" factor. You may have started because of peer pressure, but peer pressure started somewhere.
