you get something far worse: people who want power. Anyone who wants power is the LAST person who should be given any more responsibility than putting their own trousers on in the morning. That's why I reckon the old hereditary peerage we had over here was the best thing we could've had. You got into that by pure accident of birth, so you had all sorts, mostly with enough sense to know their ass from their elbow... sure, there were the occasional complete remos, but they were known about beforehand, and could be worked around... with the current system of spin, you can't tell the remos till they've got themselves stuck in the trough...
