                            Sidetracking a bit: by NOLAWitch 2003-02-13 10:46:08
Some friends of mine are trying to have a child. They've already told me more info than I care to know, but I was totally appalled by it.

Maybe it's my bias, but I can't understand why the agencies involved make it so difficult to adopt a child. It costs an arm and a leg and they do these home inspections and background checks. Why? Any fertile twerp can get knocked up and have a kid and be a crack whore or whatever. They don't do anything about that. Why should adoption be any different? If someone is crazy enough to want to adopt, let them. They can't be any worse parents than the aforementioned crack whore or Joan Crawford.

Another thing is that most insurance plans don't pay for fertility treatments. All those drugs and in vitro procedures are unpleasant as hell. Do they honestly think that someone who is unsuited to being a parent would willingly go through all that crap just to have a kid and abuse it? The insurance companies jumped on the Viagra bandwagon and that makes even less sense than helping people with fertility issues have kids.

I can't even begin to tell you what a nightmare doing the Surrogate Mother thing sounds like. It's basically lawyers at fifty paces. If your lawyer isn't better than their lawyer, you're totally screwed and out of all the money they need for "expenses".

I've tried to change the subject when it comes up, but you can't stop a baby-crazed person from yammering on and on about it until you're ready to puke.

As far as saving fetuses with severe birth defects goes, whose responsibility does the person become when the parents die off? Who will pay for all the expensive medical care that a severely disabled person requires? Sometimes it's better to not know what you're missing in my estimation.
