The Moon isn't that far away...

Completely extensible standards don't exist yet for anything, although DMX-512 comes close - you can only have 512 channels in one universe, but there are an infinite number of possible universes.

(For the layman, DMX-512 is a digital theatre control protocol.
Each 'Universe' consists of a single daisy chain of cable between all the dimmer racks or intelligent lights.)
