Why is postfix running on my Mandrake workstation? by flatlander2003-02-13 05:51:23
I've used it in mandrake in past by Arienadean 2003-02-13 07:28:31
I used it because at the time most of my email clients didn't support multiple accounts. So I used postfix and fetchmail to get the email from my accounts. It would check every 10 min... right now I've got exim and fetchmail doing the same... Polling hmmm 3 accounts. But I may also run "fetchyahoo" which is a script that fools the web interface and allows you to download webmail to a regular email client and reply via your regular client(though using your isp's mail server for sending).

If you aren't running multiple email accounts that you want fetched turn off postfix. Also turn it off if you've not used fetchmailconf(to set up extra accounts). In mandrake use the mandrake control center. Click services and find it in there click stop and uncheck start on boot. One other thing is you may wish to check through all services there. If you don't understand what it says when you press "info" on that particular service ask here and we could probably tell you if that service should be running or not. Btw mandrake also used to start inetd now xinetd. Which allows various internet server things. You want that off unless running some servers on purpose for the web otherwise you could get hacked via the ports it listens on.(at least that's what I was told)... Oh and mandrake default sets the X server to listen which means people could come through on it... however personally I never had any attempt it.
