I have been trying to get X to work on my Slackware Linux box. After RTFM several times, in serveral different places, I still have the same problem. After configuring X, I then ran startx. This caused output to scroll up the screen and then the screen goes blank, supposedly opening X. then i see a very interesting mix of colors, basically it looks like nothing at all. then that goes away and a greyish screen appears with a cursor in the middle.
The mouse does not respond, even though XFree86 said that it detected a mouse at /dev/mouse
In addition the keyboard does not respond. ctrl-alt-backspace does nothing. escape, alt-F4 (dont even know if that does anything in Linux) nothing makes anything happen. Also the Caps Lock, Num Lock, and Scroll Lock keys do not make the corresponding leds on the keyboard do anything.
a hard boot is required.
The system is as follows:
Pentium 100
Cyrrus Logic GD [the serial number escapes me at the moment but the driver for it was in the list on xf86config]
64 meg of ram
the mouse is a PS/2 mouse
the keyboard is also PS/2
I am also pretty sure that i got the keyboard type right in the config file as well.
I looked up the correct horizontal and vertical refresh rates for the monitor, so those are right. at this point i am at a loss as to what to do. any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thank you. as of now i am off to class, so i wont be able to check this until this afternoon. |
