you don't hit them with it, you just use a rolled up newspaper to make a loud noise (hit it against your leg) to get their attention. if you want to hit anything with the rolled up newspaper try hitting yourself, it'll do more good than hitting the animal. :D (note: i'm not accusing you of hitting animals, just fyi for new pet owners)
