Fun Silly Question (Maybe) by BoofleNord2003-02-09 07:00:30
What the heck, here goes... by Adiplomat2003-02-09 12:17:48

      HEY! by myke2003-02-09 16:02:19
see if I can do this without getting larted by tnglives 2003-02-09 20:51:01
Respond to a thread in which myke's participating, that is. Not that I wasn't up to same deserving mischief in each case.

Anyway, I'd like to second his statement. Even the Martian reference is a valid technical term according to the jargon file and other corroborations. Everything else is accurate enough, but focused on ISDN.

Hmmm... definitely more familiar with software than low-level hardware. Wrote the following paragraph before rereading the question:

Don't forget to determine whether OSI layer 1 (physical) is cuprous (copper) or optical fiber. If the signal is analog over POTS, ensure that the end-user modulator/demodulator matches the ITU-T v.92 protocol and that the remote digital PRI has the appropriate firmware. For analog or ISDN devices, the user must be able to create a PPP connection to the remote POP and initiate RADIUS authentication.

As for hardware, the most complex connection is probably myke's listing:
<wall plate><RJ11---CAT3---RJ11><ISDN/analog modem><MDI/RJ45---CAT5---RJ45/MDIX><802.3 router><MDI/RJ45---CAT5---RJ45/MDI><10/100NIC @ CPU>

Note that the NIC can be onboard, internal PCI, ISA, external USB, PCMCIA, or even CompactFlash.

Another possibility is an 802.11a/b/g wireless router, with an external USB wireless NIC. Note that 2.4GHz "Wi-Fi" 11Mbps 802.11b, 5GHz "Wi-Fi5" 54Mbps 802.11a, and 2.4GHz 54Mbps "54g" 802.11g devices may require dedicated WAPs, but that multiple transceivers may not be interoperable.

Finally, unless the support staff handles DSL, cable, or point-to-point tier-1 digital services, there's the standard modem...

<pots rj11---cat3 UTP---rj11><modem><DB25/DB9---DCE RS-232---DB25/DB9><serial @ computer>

<pots rj11---cat3 UTP---rj11><modem><USB slave----USB master><USB @ computer>

<pots rj11---cat3 UTP---rj11><internal modem><PCI/AMR slot @ computer>
