Last paragraph is my opinion...the rest is just info you may want...
Heh...I've got it here in three versions... It's II Corinthians 6:14, btw.
King James -
"Be ye not unequally yokedtogether with unbelievers: for what fellowship hath righteousness withunrighteousness? and what communion hath light with darkness?"
Revised Standard -
"Do not be mismated with unbelievers. For what partnership have righteousness and iniquity? Or what fellowship has light with darkness?"
And the New International Version -
"Do not be yoked together with unbelievers. For what do righterousness and wickedness have in common? Or what fellowship can light have with darkness?"
If we follow the chapter in the NIV, Paul continues... "15What harmony is there between Christ and Belial? What does a believer have in common with an unbeliever? 16What agreement is there between the temple of God and idols? For we are the temple of the living God. As God has said, 'I will live with them and walk with tme, and I will be their God and they will be my people.'b"
bLev. 26:12, Jer. 32:38, Ezek. 37:27
From what I understand, the Corinthians were having a lil problem with mixing with other religions when they were worshipping and stuff, and Paul was getting onto them for it. Sort of like "pluralism" and "universalism" today... Trying to incorporate other religions into Christianity and vice versa. Geneva Bible Translation Notes, a commentary, says, talking about Paul, "Now he rebukes them boldly, because they became fellows with infidels in outward idolatry, as though it were an indifferent thing." How this applies to us today is a matter of some debate.
As for today's lesson...make what you will of it. Most people I've talked with think it only applies to religious services and marriage... There are some that take it to extremes and barely talk to non-Christians, then there's the other extreme that thinks it has no use for us today... I generally stand with the marriage/religious services crowd. I tend to think of marriage as a type of religious service anyway. :P |
