some are duel purpose by Arienadean 2003-02-09 10:35:37
My switch is smc and has 8 ports but 7 really are normal on it the 8th can either be used as an uplink or as a regular port. Now for my 5port hub yes it's 5ports plus 1 uplink if I remember right but it's an acer and diffrent brands may list it diffrent.

Hmmm and I don't see why not on the setup. I have a hub downstairs. The cable modem goes into it's uplinke. Node 1 is my roommate and that cable goes to his system obviously... I think he has node 2 as well hooked to one of his secondary computers. I'm on node 3... of which the cat5 goes up through the wall... across the ceiling and through another wall into my room... across my floor into my firewall's first nic card. Then the second nic card has a cable out into node 1 on the switch. Node 2 is this computer I'm on and node 3 is my sons computer in the next room... Soon enough I'll probably have node 4 up or node 4 and 5... which one of the computers that will be added is a 486 and the other a p100... But the 486 and p100 are needing some hardware adjustments and OS's first.
