I'm not a Mandrake user (all my boxen are belong to SuSE), but I found The Linux Documentation Project to be an invaluable source of info. Rpmfind is a great place to get any programs you didn't get on your install CDs from the box-set.
- DVDs are a bit of a problem, you may have heard of DeCSS? I haven't got anything working there but someone else here may have.
- Are you looking for an FTP client or server? Both should have come with the install CDs, there are several out there if not.
- Image viewing can be performed normally by Konqueror, don't install Gimp unless you want to edit them. Again, I'm sure that there are plenty out there to choose from, install a few and see which one suits your needs best.
- If you're running an Nvidia card then yes, otherwise maybe. See if there is a Howto on the LDP for your card.
