The experts say that to be really secure the disk should be overwritten several times with special patterns as well as pseudorandom bits. (And if you want to be really serious about it you should then take the drive apart and wave a magnet over the discs and then sand-blast them. Then you should break them in small small pieces and melt them down, and then you should ... I'm actually only half-joking here.)
