narcolepsy... yet another sleep disorder by rottweiler2003-02-06 14:22:06

onset usually happens in the teens and the disease can progress until the mid-20's. This makes it particularly difficult to diagnose in less severe cases because "everyone knows that teenagers sleep alot." Without a sleep latency test, it's difficult to diagnose. Perceived "drop off time" cannot be relied on. Given the large numbers of sleep disorders and the very different treatments, it's best to get the test. For those who actually get diagnosed, it typically takes 7 to 10 doctors' visits before they get sent to a specialist who can make a reasonably good diagnosis.
