It didn't sound to me like she was a perfectly sweet person to begin with. She's pulling all this passive-aggressive crap on the family and that's not a technique you learn late in the game. Just because some of us are lucky enough to have had swell grandparents who baked cookies, etc. doesn't mean that everybody did. Look around you and find a young jerkweed a$$hole. In forty years, that person will be an old jerkweed a$$hole. Cut thewrongcrowd some slack. If the old lady has nothing else to do besides concentrate on her own well-being, she's being selfish to place the burden on others who have to earn a living and build their own futures. I've read some letters in Dear Abby and Ann Landers about old folks in the nursing home complaining that nobody pays attention to them and then there was the other side of the story where the offspring of these old codgers remembered being mistreated, neglected and sometimes abused by these same old codgers when they were young. Thewrongcrowd is frustrated. Let's offer sympathy.
