A web designer I worked with used to keep his display running in 256 colour mode, and several times he'd show me this "amazing technique he used for making graphics look better". Basically he'd load a 16m colour image in, which would of course look weird on his screen, and reduce it to 256 colours, making it look much cleaner (again, only on his screen). I never had the heart to explain to him...
