Jay walking is when you don't use a marked crosswalk to cross a road. Or if you don't cross at an intersection... ie you just run cross mid road over to the other side. This can happen when there is alot of traffic sometimes pedestrians walk between cars or if there is no marked or light controlled crosswalk they get impatient or don't wish to walk down to another crossing. Here where I am it's rarely enforced though is a fineable offense. The only time I've ever really notice them pay attention is if an accident occurs involving a pedestrian. It can be deemed the pedestrian was at fault or partially at fault and that taken into account during fines, insurance, etc. But even if a pedestrian ignores the rules and steps into the road where there is no intersection or crosswalk it's the drivers responsibility to stop... pedestrians have right away. So even if the pedestrian is at fault the driver can still get in some trouble unless it was proven somehow that things were unavoidable.(blind spots, poor road conditions, it was too sudden, etc)
We also have seatbelt bilaws and helmet bilaws(helmets for motorcycles as well as regular non motorized bikes). Helmet fine is $50 and they don't always charge you... it depends on the officer and their mood of the day and perhaps how you deal with them. Sometimes they just warn you but on second time caught will fine or if they've seen you repeatedly do it even if they didn't stop you in past. As for seatbelts some ignore it driving by someone with no seatbelts on. But they do have road checks every so often. You can get not using a seatbelt waived ie so they can't fine you but you require a medical note from the doctor stating why... otherwise the cop will either warn you or fine you.(fine is up to $500 I think<shrug>) Similarly they have road stops to check for drunk drivers during holiday stuff. |
