Going back to my version with one less dimension (because it's easier to do metaphors), imagine that the sphere that the 2D world is wrapped on is a baloon. As you inflate it, the 2D world expands (dots on the baloon would move apart - the surface is stretching), but the space this 3D object is expanding into doesn't even exist to the little 2D world being stretched. So our 3D Universe won't overlap itself. Eris only knows what the 4D sphere is in though, or what it's expanding into. 5D space? Ick...fractal... =)
