Things can escape - due to a thing called quantum tunneling - matter can escape from a black hole. Normally the only reason we can tell a black hole exists is we can see the X-rays and G-rays given off by the matter that the black hole is sucking up and compressing.

I agree with the not exploding bit, although when a black hole reaches a certain size maybe something will happen - we don't have any idea what happens to the laws of physics at such high matter density and temperature.
