There are plenty of theories.... see, its Shawnigan Lake. Shawnigan, unfortunately, isn't a Native word, like almost all the other areas around here (Cowichan, Quamichan, Koksilah, Kwalikum, Naniamo, etc.) There wasn't any explorer named "Shawnigan" (although there is a theory that two explorers, Shaw and Finnegan, discovered the lake, although that's never been confirmed). The list goes on and on, but I suspect the source of the name will never be found.
