We're an ancient people, but it's pretty clear that the Biblical myths are far from true, and the hints from the archaeologists are tantalizing: The kings existed, but what was the extent of their kingdom? Did king Solomon exist? Was the Temple really in Jerusalem, or was that a post-Babilonian myth, and the original temple was really the one in Samaria? Was there a "holy arc" in the temple? What was in it?
What exactly was the religious makeup in the kings' time? It certainly was not monotheistic, as the archaeologists tell us that at least three gods were worshipped in temples around the holy land. What made the priests of one particular god more powerful than those of the rest, to the extinction of all the other's mythology and written word? How did monotheism emerge? |
