A HUB is a dumb box that broadcasts out packets. It gets one, it bounces it to all connected boxes. Because Ethernet is a bus, this can cause collisions and will waste speed. But fast ethernet is very fast, so you may not notice it, depending on what you're doing.

A SWITCH is a smart box that examines the packet's destination IP and only sends it where it needs to go. This is obviously more efficient, but means that switches are more complex, so cost more.
