The guillotine had been invented several years before by some guy, who remains a mystery (it wasn't Doctor Antoine Louis), and the first French one was built in 1789. Doctor Joseph Ignace Guillotin suggested to the National Assembly that it would be a humane way to kill convicted criminals a few years before the revolution. The last person to be executed by the Guillotine in France was Hamida Djandoubi, was met his end in 1977.
