Tips for buying a new Mainboard by glenalec 2003-01-19 00:46:13
A friend of my SO's mainboard has gone to Redmond and I have offered to help her replace it. What curren technology is good (ie, chipsets, MB manufacturers).

She only does web monitoring of the local stock market under win98 on it, so speed is not critical. I'm sure the slowest board I could get new today would be an order of magnitude better than she needs. Reliability is VERY important, to me at least - I don't like people having to replace their parts for any reason other than need for upgraded features!

I'm thinking Baby-ATX (She certainly does not need all those PCI slots on an ATX - heck _I_ don't). I am thinking if I get her a socket-A, I can offload that new Duron 1.1 that doesn't work with my crud system to her at half price and save her some and recoup myself some at the same time. She can't keep the current CPU as it is a slot-1 monstrosity!

BTW: I know AMD introduced the 'Slot-A' because they didn't have the process technology to get the CPU and cache on the same die initially. Is it true Intel produced the 'Slot-1' because they mistakenly believed AMD was doing something forward thinking and they better copy them or be left behind??? If so ROFLMAO!
