Question about the top news item by krupa 2003-01-13 14:39:55
on the Daily Static.

I understand all the arguments put forth in the letter. However, the letter doesn't address the game maker's side. The letter talks about the negative side of implementing anti-piracy measures on honest game buyers, but doesn't address the real or perceived benefits seen by the game makers.

What I'm wondering is why the game makers are doing it. Of course, the easy answer is so that people don't copy the games, give them to friends, thereby robbing the game makers of revenue. My question is how much money does the game makers think they are losing from piracy? Do they think it's substantial enough to lose a few gamers because of problems with the anti-piracy stuff? Are the problems mentioned in the letter a direct proven result of the anti-piracy measures? If the game makers were to stop trying to copy-protect their games, would their revenues go up or down? Since there are cracks for most games, would their revenue even change? Since certain people are going to break the law (the letter admits that copying the games is illegal) regardless of how easy or hard it is, does it even matter?

I don't really care that much. I don't play computer games much anymore (actually, I almost never play PC games at all at this point.) I'm just curious.
