That's slightly different based on where you are... at least here in Canada, the labour laws are specified by each province.

The province of Ontario laws say you can't be fired for giving notice, but they can pay you in lieu and send you on your way. (There's a real heartbreaker)...

But on a totally other note about telling the old boss, just sit him down, /AFTER YOU HAVE THE NEW JOB/, and say, "Working here was awesome, but I need room to grow, and I found another opportunity I just can't pass up. I wish you the best, bla bla bla...

And for everyone else, no matter how much you hate your current employer, NEVER EVER EVER EVER burn bridges. You'll learn the hard way if you do.
