It really depends on your bosses. In my experience, I was able to tell my boss beforehand because I trusted him so well. That trust was not misplaced. But I didn't attempt to bargain, nor did he want me to. We had both seen far too many other employees who chose to do so, accepted an offer to stay, and got royally burned later on. But sometimes it works out. So realize the risk of doing so before taking it.
