workplace rules, common ways, etc... by rottweiler 2003-01-13 12:36:38
I'm currently hunting a new job because although I like my job (mostly) well enough,
1. The pay is $13K below the "average" window pay scale
2. There is no upward mobility track, thus I'm stuck with incremental annual increases unless I get out of here
3. I'm getting pulled into an area that gives me sqweems and they don't pay me enough for it (I can be bought but I need enough to get that ethicotomy)
4. My SO is now solidly employed, so I can take a leap myself.

But... I like my boss, I like those I work with, I know they value me and want to keep me but are stuck in a political situation. (They gave me a 20% boost last year to bring me closer to industry but couldn't go higher in one jump and can't jump again for a long time).

Anyway... I have an interview on Tuesday and if it pans out, I'm wondering how to go about telling my boss and leaving gracefully. I don't think it's wise to go up to him today and say "Yo! I need to take a long lunch Tuesday for an interview"... (I don't think he'll take it well). Even if this one doesn't pan out, I'm still going to keep looking and something eventually will.

How does one do this well, to allow returning at a later date if needful?
