Windows media and Quicktime started it by taking over and breaking real player files. I used to spend a lot of time trying to make them all work in harmony. Quicktime was the worst because it INSISTED on being the Netscape .PNG renderer even though it took 10 times as long and didn't work as well, even if you unchecked use as a plugin.
