| how bizarre. I played basketball for my HS over 20 years ago. The first year was that weird girls version (uniforms were satin for cripes sake!), then we went to standard whomp'em ball, got a PanAmerican player as a coach and proceeded to teach the rest of South Carolina why power basket and volley ball were the way to win championships. That school was in the heart of rural, Baptist, Southern USA... but they wanted championships more than gender differentiation (and we gave it to them) and that nastiness went out the window.
Now living in the MidWest...My kids get the same PE. In 7th/8th grade the classes are separate but mostly because the boys are idiots and need more instructors with whips and chairs to keep in line. Also the girls tend to be about a foot taller than the boys and it gives the boys a complex. There is no differentiation on how or what they are taught. No doubt the subtle stuff is still there, but it's constantly being debated. My company, born, bred and grown in the MidWestern US has women in management all through the entire structure... AND it's a conservative company. Conservative in the "we're gonna make money" sense.
My eldest attended Smith College this year, bastion of fem-nazi-dom. She is pretty much an advocate type herself, but simply is appalled at the lack of balance and understanding of the world that the "feminists" spout. Her claim is that after a certain concentration of estrogen, your brain probably turns into mush and you lose balance and contact with the outside world. |
