I love my Herman Miller chair... by ktownson 2003-01-13 08:19:32
And my employer seems to think spending $900 on a chair is better than losing me for two months while I recover from carpal tunnel surgery or a back operation.

To me it is a tool of my trade, just like my computer hardware and software, and a darned fine one. I don't get pampered much in this job--the chair is about it.

Is it any different than getting a nice, big 21" monitor for $3k when you *could* make do with a 15" squinter? Or getting a nice Dell workstation with lots of RAM, storage and horsepower when a $499 Emachine might get the job done? It comes down to how well the employer is willing to outfit its workers to do the work. Fortunately, the U.S. Government (at least this part of it) is getting serious about work-related injuries and is making an effort to provide its workers with tools they can comfortably use throughout an 8-10 hour day without creating injury. Sick leave and productivity loss are much more expensive than pricey chairs.

One other thing: taking care of your spine in your mid-to-early twenties is something you will appreciate in middle age. Snicker now, groan later.
