In infants' school, girls were not allowed to play football. In junior school girls were not allowed to play football. The football pitch took up most of the playground. We spent several weeks chasing all boys off the netball pitch (on which we played football) until we got in trouble for it. So we started skipping. Every girl who could brought in a rope or a bit of washing line (several types of which were swiftly banned) and we took up as much of the playground as we could learning double-dutch. And boys attempting to join in usually ended up in first aid.
High school there were no boys. I'm assuming however that the boys school does not offer 'textile technology' (sewing to normal people), but does offer wood and metalwork. They probably don't do nearly as much cooking either.
I had a big row with my sewing teacher on the subject of teaching her grandmother to suck eggs and the false economy of cheap needles. (see Jane Eyre)
First job - treated like something found on bottom of shoe.
Second job - all bosses male, all employees female. Had to fight off director twice my age in back of a cab after one christmas do.
Third job - One of two women on helpdesk of over 100. Elaine generally seen as 'mother' figure. I was one of the lads.
Current job - everyone gets treated the same. Not much socialising, it seems like everyone's paranoid about being PC except me and the head of IT. |
