Hi there! by JamesG2003-01-13 01:56:13
well, I've not used RH or Mandrake... by mcnutcase 2003-01-13 02:31:54
but I started with SuSE (I'm migrating away now because it's too helpful; I'm not learning anything new) and it is very easy for newbies. My SO has adapted to it very fast from being almost exclusively a WinXP Pro user (this is 8.0, I haven't tried 7.3 (it was replaced before I got into Linux)). YaST2 is a very friendly setup tool, and the install is very easy. If you have Windows on a FAT/FAT32 partition, you can keep it - SuSE will happily share space with it, and LILO has no trouble booting it. The one thing I will say is be careful with RPMs - it's not the most intelligent package manager, and RPMs for one distro can really stuff other ones (I nearly lost my system after installing a Mandrake RPM...). RPMfind tends to find most Mandrake RPMs, so if you think you're going to install a lot of extras, Mandrake is good (and deliberately kept compatible with RedHat RPMs...). Whichever you choose, SuSE's default MOTD is apposite; Have a lot of fun!
