"The Illinois death penalty system is arbitrary" by werefish 2006-11-19 12:55:59
Quote from outgoing Illinois governor George Ryan.

"A commission set up in Illinois by Governor Ryan found that the death sentences were given disproportionately to the poor, people from ethnic minorities and in cases in which informers' evidence was used.

The results changed the governor's own mind. In 1998, he had been elected to the post as a supporter of the death penalty.

"How many more cases of wrongful convictions have to occur?" asked Governor Ryan."

At last the American leadership is waking up to the reality of death sentences. Finally we have someone who is willing to listen to what we Europeans have known for years, and better than that actually behave morally rather than as the voters demand. I only hope that your president follows this example and releases the 452 sentenced to die in his home state.
