XP Pro's pretty good, as long as you take it off the Teletubbies look; my SO dual-boots with SuSE 8.0 and spends about equal amounts of time in each (she needs a C compiler for her assignments, but there are some compatibility issues with eg. her NIC under Linux, since it's a built-in one; she's keeping her Windows partition as FAT32 so she can read from and write to it for transferring the assignments). It does have the common failing of Windows OSes; it assumes that you're an idiot. I can't deal with that, but you might.
