Microsoft was never ordered to support Java. by Avium 2003-01-04 23:01:00
They chose to support it but in their usual "embrace and extend" attitude. Namely, embrace a nice useful piece of technology and then add your own extensions in that effectively make it proprietary.

Unfortunately for them Sun was keeping a close eye on it and caught them changing things they weren't supposed to be changing and filed for breach of contract. Sun won the court case which meant that if Microsoft chose to support Java they would have to play by Sun's rules.

That, of course, didn't sit very well with the folks at Redmond so they dropped support of Java (Visual J++ anyone?) and created a language based on C++ called "COOL." I believe it eventually morphed into C#.
