I've gotten many of the answers I was looking for today.
I know this wasn't what we were discussing, but it is another question of mine for ernest, thoughtful Christians like you (I never seemed to meet many while attending church): How much leeway does God give? One of my biggest turnoffs was always when two pastors stood up and said two different things and both insisted they were right and God inspired. Obviously one of them wasn't as right as he hought he was.
To me, it always seemed like the details never mattered. Does the God who created all things really care if I know whether He is coming before or after the tribulation? Does He really care how I was baptised or if I got baptised at all? Does He even care if I worship Him? Sure, a person who loves God will do anything and everything to show it, including all the rituals such as baptism and worship, but what if in a person's rush to worship and gain knowledge, he or she actually stumbles into falsehood masquerading as truth? Would God be understanding that this mistake was made in an attempt to know Him better?
Sorry, these are probably deeper questions better saved for a different time, but my curiosity has really been peaked. Mind if I link to this thread in my diary? |
