OK, this makes much more sense. But my initial question (at least in my own mind) hasn't been answered: Why the change in covenants or laws?
It seems to me (and please tell me if I am wrong) that the only reasons the change the rules are because 1) the first ones were wrong or 2) the situation changed and the rules were no longer applicable.
My friends and I have repeatedly discussed the first case, but the result of that discussion always entails God not being perfect (making a mistake by using rules that ended up being wrong), an end result none of us liked.
The second case I've never discussed much, that somehow the original covenant became outdated. Why didn't God just go with the second covenant from the get go? My thoughts on the matter are either the opinions of the time changed God's mind (again, not an acceptable conclusion) or that God always intended to switch covenants after a while. But if the latter, is the case, my next question is "why?" Why did God feel it necessary or appropriate to change the law after a certain period of time had passed?
I'm sorry if this became a jumbled mess of questions, but I really am looking for answers here. Any input would be greatly appreciated. |
