nowhere does it say God planned out everything before starting to create (Deity knows most geeks skip the planning process). So God could have created the plants thinking "hey, these are cool", but got sick of keeping them alive Himself. So He created a nice recurring source of life giving energy, the Sun, so He could get on with his coding. God was a geek :)
